Thomas Sydney Churchward

Police Constable 470, Toronto Police Force | Private, 3rd Battalion (Toronto Regiment) CEF

Thomas Sydney Churchward was born at Buckfastleigh, Devonshire England on April 8th 1892. Churchward resettled in Toronto, and joined the Toronto Police Force as Police Constable No. 470, and was posted to No. 9 Station (Keele St). Churchward lived at 236 Weston Road with his wife Sadie and their two children.

On September 20th 1916, Constable Churchward enlisted in the 234th Battalion (Peel) CEF, in Toronto. After local training, he sailed to England on the HMT Scandinavia, and on October 6th 1917, Churchward landed in France in a reinforcement draft for the 3rd Battalion (Toronto Regiment).

One month later, on Tuesday, November 6th 1917, Churchward was killed in action attacking Passchendaele Ridge during the Third Battle of Ypres.

With no known grave, Constable Thomas Sydney Churchward is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium.
